Carnivale Queensday Special; a review by Alexis Fletcher

My Carnivale Kings….

As a fellow promoter/agency manager I was looking forward to the Carnivale DJ showcase…. of course joined by Michael James & Terry Toner

Having been to street parties before I knew what to expect (or so I thought….) but those of you who have been lucky enough to experience Queens Day in Amstersdam will know that this day is different to any other

The placing of the open air Carnivale stage was perfect…. lots of cool bars like Ocho (which is my lucky number) and Ibiza (my second favourite place after Amsterdam) which gave me a good feeling about the day! Lots of people were using the street as a thoroughfare but most ended up staying for a little rave as the DJs took the ladder to the stage high up on scaffolding – like a king to his throne….

Kassassie & Helt started proceedings early handing over to Freddie Lucas & Radiosus (donning a bright orange trilby!) as the street started to fill up – as did the air with some nice techno grooves…. Getting the party into full swing with their disco sounds Maketoire & Pennypacker kept the crowds smiling in the Dutch sun, with tunes such as Galas Freed from Desire!

Then in true Amsterdam style Canivales founder Ben Komor (also sporting a smart trilby) stormed the stage with energetic yet deep & rhythmic tunes as the crowds started to melt into position for what was set to be an amazing afternoon…. With MC Mas-Tino (okay am I missing something with the trilby thing here… Or were they discreet crowns, in reference to the lady we were celebrating?) reminding us This Is Amsterdam”, Terry Toner from Electronations drove the clubbers into electric frenzies, Jop and Jordi gave their fun filled performance of electronic music before Michael James delivered a perfectly timed and eclectic mix of upbeat house and techno!

Mind01 the penultimate DJ by no means started to bring the tone down…. with nothing but positive reactions from the crowd his twisted journey of electronic effects and loops kept the tempo going, as LoPoll finsished off with some pumping vinyl tunes like Laurent Garniers Man With The Red Face…. In their own characteristic manner, the last two DJ’s kept their audiences smiling as the party carried on to Boom Chicago.

After an amazing party at Studio 80 with Carnivale and The Zoo Project in late 2009 I knew these guys (all kings in my eyes) had the know how to work a crowd – and watching them playing out their own productions to the like minded free spirits on the streets – my excpectations were exceeded….

Now let’s look forward to Carnivale’s Cadenza party at new club Air and let’s make Carnivale at The Zoo Project in Ibiza happen – all in favour? Alexis Fletcher
