Are you in “Sync”?

August 23, 2010

Hello there, you’ve might expected to hear from me earlier, it’s been a while since I wrote an article I know.  Today we’re gonna have a look at the latest innovation for dj’s..  Some of you know, some don’t, but the digital dj era has arrived..  As it’s possible to control your hardware digitally now,it seems that we’re moving further and further away from the authentic turntables..  Bit by bit you’ll find your local turntable-ists connecting weird looking machines and controllers in stead of plugging in their turntables to the mixer.. Having the ability to sync tracks saves you some time that, if used well, gives you the opportunity to build a more creative mix or dive deeper in to mastering the EFX that are integrated into the software…

The latest development in digital dj-world comes from Native Instruments, having introduced the latest product in their Traktor range, the Traktor Kontrol S4.Custom-tailored for Traktor, the S4 fuses a premium-quality 4 channel dj mixer, a built-in 24 bit/96 khz soundcard, an intuitive controller and the flagship Traktor Pro S4 software..  It also comes in a hardcase with laptop stand, a smart move by NI.

Combining an extended version of the existing Traktor Pro software with a dedicated hardware controller, the S4 is aiming to provide an all-in-one solution for digital DJs.  The controller comprises a four-channel mixer, an integrated 24-bit/96kHz audio interface based on NI’s Audio 4 DJ, and interface sections for looping, cueing, track browsing and effects control.
Two sample decks are among the new additions.  Up to eight beat-synched or one-shot samples can be added simultaneously to mix, with the option to capture and loop recordings from the live mix, according to  NI.  Meanwhile the jog wheels, based on “a new patent-pending electromagnetic technology”, are run over NI’s high resolution NHL protocol and are said to offer a superior performance than that of standard MIDI.
But for people already using Traktor, a 1000 $ seems a lot as the software and soundcard already come with previous versions.  Ofcourse developing newer versions and getting the software to perform better also takes a lot of time and money…  I imagine some of the hardcore Traktor users will create their own scripts which will provide another approach toward the user’s experience.  For those who don’t like the idea of ditching their time-coded vinyl or CDs, they will be pleased to learn that this feature is scheduled in as future update, presumably during early 2011.   The video below takes a closer look at the new sample decks and loop recorders.

I find this way of performing very interesting and have used it myself for over a year now..  But some people will say that it’s not dj-ing..Getting started, learning to sync your records and mastering the pitch control is a long way..  It seems that this option to “sync” makes it very easy for a starting dj today as he or she can easily skip that part..  However, why not use the possibilities that are out there?  All these innovations are out there to grab and use.

In my opinion being creative and developing  your own sound is what it takes to become a successful artist.  The most important factor is the result of your work..making the crowd explode..with vinyl’s, c.d.’s, laptops and MIDI-controllers..who care’s?  You perhaps?  The discussion is on!  All in all… music and technology is a blessing to be a part of this current time in history!!!   The options are creating dialogue.  Add imagination and followthrough and you’ve got innovation.
Peace out, Mind 01
NB; Traktor Kontrol S4 will be available this Winter with a suggested retail price of $999/899 Euro.

Well, If this new sync machine was around in the late 90-ies I would’ve had a chance in becoming world famous :( Guess it wasn’t my time. But very proud of you Ro for being innovative and trying new things that others don’t dare or simply wont do (like the French clinging on to their corks instead of screw tops). Keep up the good work and thankx for explaining your machinery!
