In September 2010 my debut novel Ego Faber came out at Ambo-Anthos Publishers. It’s a story about friendship and love, set against the background of Amsterdam in the 2000s. The book is my take on Generation Y – the fast living twenty-somethings that witnessed 9/11 on television, experienced their fair share of sex, drugs and rock ’n roll and created Facebook in the meantime.
Written from the perspective of a young nameless protagonist who becomes close friends with Amsterdam hipsters Ego Faber and Rein Somers the book tries to capture the mood, the atmosphere and the spirit of the youth at the beginning of the millennium.
Fuelled with some hubris, narcotics and a longing for adventure the three university students visit clubs, concerts and fashion shows, while Dutch society is confronted with the political murders of Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh. This hedonistic life style slowly changes when the protagonist falls hopelessly in love with the mysterious Zara, who eventually becomes the girlfriend of Ego Faber.
From that point on even visits to Berlin, London or Lowlands can’t prevent the disintegration of their friendship and even worse.
Music plays an important role in the book – starting with the motto quoting a song from The Libertines, but especially in the numerous scenes filled with music of acts like Daft Punk, The Strokes and Justice, but also of older artists like The Kinks, Iggy Pop, The Smiths, Duran Duran and The Cure. During the writing process my iPod kept me writing, channelling my imagination and directing the rhythm of my sentences.
In the months after publication the novel was received quite well and got a second printing at the beginning of 2011. Time will tell of course if Ego Faber becomes the portrait of a generation that I intended it to be, but for now I hope you are curious enough to read it, so you can judge for yourself… Deal with it – rock and roll!
