I always give my new client this statement to consider before I start working with them: “Always have one thing foremost in you’re thought process when you’re designing your business model and that is that computers are never going to get any worse at copying things and that means any thing!.” Being the UK’s first and only CONSULTING SOCIAL ENGINEER, plus a Word of Mouth Marketeer, Open Source -Activist and Gonzo Journalist, to me digital rights management software (DRM) of any kind, is something that I have always been abhorrently and verdantly opposed to. I feel that all digital content should be shared freely, and that copyright laws should be totally re-written and generally liberalised to reflect this. Because from my point of view this would not only benefit the consumer – it is also the only way that media businesses can now survive in this truly digital file sharing but recessional age. DRM, not only limits the sharing of material, but causes problems for people who have bought that content legally, stopping them moving their purchases to other platforms and often other devices, in effect it alienates consumers by forcing them to stay with a certain hardware manufacturer or [...]

The cost of calling mobile phones from other networks and landlines is set to fall after Ofcom imposed severe cuts. IT Bloke-London, My Word of Mouth marketing magazine in the UK, http://www.itbloke.net has for a long time worked for and supported the Terminate the rate campaign; http://www.terminatetherate.org Well it seems that now our, Word of Mouth Campaign and hard work have finally paid off with Ofcom the UK’s communications regulator ruling this week that Mobile companies have to drop their termination charges and it looks like many countries in Europe are set to follow suit in light of this decision. Termination charges – the fee mobile phone firms charge rivals for handling calls from their networks – will now fall by 80% over the next four years. Mobile operators in the UK have up until now charged between 4.18p and 4.48p to the cost of delivering a call to another network. But Ofcom has now ordered this reduced to 0.69p by 2014-15, and says the that the cuts must be passed on to consumer. The phased reductions will begin on 1 April with the termination rate for the big four operators in the UK – O2, Everything Everywhere, Vodafone, and [...]

This week amongst other things, I have been reporting on the UK’s first ‘twibel’ case. While there was no ruling – the case was settled out of court – it is the first reported case where a person has paid compensation for a libel on Twitter. Taken alongside new CAP code regulations, the risks of getting it wrong within social media appear greater than ever. So are the days of ‘experimenting’ well and truly over? The case in question involved Colin Elsbury tweeting that his rival in the Caerphilly County Council by-election, Eddie Talbot had been forcibly removed from the polling booth by police. The tweet, which turned out to be false, was sent on the day of the election. Elsbury won by just 160 votes; Talbot sued and settled out of court for damages and costs. Libel laws are nothing new but social media has significantly increased the risks of being caught out exponentially. Every comment is now recorded and potentially seen by thousands. The real danger of the ‘twibel’ case and CAP code changes, though, I would argue is an over-reaction by management, restricting employees’ creativity to the extent that using social media is rendered pointless. What cases [...]

To be truly effective in the implementation of Word of Mouth/Social Media, Publicity/Marketing you first have to be totally open minded and not scared to explore any new trends or experiences in any new markets. One of my personal favorites and by far one of the most underestimated is the Gay and Lesbian market place, So to celebrate Hollands more liberal and open minded embrace of all alternative lifestyles, I thought this week I would write you an article to extol just a few of the many benefits of courting this highly affluent market place in the promotion of your parties and music events. For decades, gay men and women have been living invisible lives. Not only in the media and on the streets, but also in the marketplace. Thankfully that’s all rapidly changing now, thanks to growing efforts within the gay community, members of which are actively working to claim their identities not only as citizens, but also as consumers. Their hard efforts have paid off (and about time to) and today, gay consumers are not only participating in the marketplace, but more and more they’re driving it, too. The gay market has come out of the closet and [...]

‘Well there you go, pleasantly corrected, yet again’. Following on from my recent article on the exciting and dynamic Sport of Roller-Derby, it turns out, that Amsterdam now has it’s very upcoming Roller-Derby team, in in the guise of the Amsterdam Derby-Dames. This is utterly Fantastic news which has definitely got most of our staff here at Carnivale more than a little excited and they now can’t wait to go and see their first bout. Fairly old school stuff for me having a wife who already competes in London, however, still can’t wait to see you galls in Steaming Hot Roller-Derby Action over there in Amsterdam, on my next visit. We would like to start off this article by congratulating you all on your hard efforts in putting this together and creating what looks like such dynamic team. Of course it is only fitting and correct that the Netherlands Capital now has it’s very own Roller-Derby team. It simply goes without saying that Carnivale will be supporting you all the way with your future efforts in whatever way we can, Keep up the Brilliant work girls, we are all very proud of you and are sure that you will [...]

As some of you know I have practiced and taught martial arts for most of my life, firstly I qualified as a Black Belt in Jujitsu, then when I became disenchanted with the effectiveness of that I swapped to Krav-Maga, which I have taught for many years now. I have also dabbled quite extensively with La-Canne and Savate. It is really easy to say of me that I love my martial arts, however recently I have had all my concepts challenged when I was invited to help in reviving an almost long lost one, that was believe it or not mostly British in origin. However always keen to learn new fighting styles I agreed and gave it a go. Most of you will have seen the recent, reboots/re-imaginings of Sherlock Holmes, on BBC and on the Big Screen, both really seem to work in there own way. However what most of you won’t know is that the martial arts that are used in them are derived from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who in “The Adventure of the Empty House” accredited Holmes with being a master in Baritsu, in reality Conan Doyle had made a mistake and had really meant [...]

Greetings all you Carnivaliars out there, you do not see me writing articles in the Music column that often, usually I like to leave it to the “PROFESSIONALS” who know your neck of the woods far better than me. However there has been so much talk about KILL ALL HIPSTERS in East London recently especially around, my new home Broadway Market/London Fields, that I felt compelled to give them a quick review, just to re-iterate, Carnivale and Zanadu’s overtly impartial standpoints, plus there has not been any music reviews at all for what seem like forever, so I bit the bullet and here it is. KILL ALL HIPSTERS is an Indie, DJ-Collective which organises nights in various clubs in Amsterdam. A fusion of indie, electro-pop, post-punk, indietronica, eclectic pop and cutting edge new releases is being played. A Key-member is Arnold Scheepmaker who works with a diverse bunch of international dj’s in a mobster/Wu Tang Clan like structure. To me, the best new music is pretty uncategorisable these days. Strictly speaking it ain’t dance music, but it’s not guitar music either. It’s a hyper-eclectic, hard to pin down hybrid of electro-vibes, indie-mentality, messy beats, edgy guitars and an uncompromising [...]

Well it’s official ~ “I am a Roller-Derby Widow”, You see, there’s a sporting phenomenon sweeping Europe at the moment, but you’re not likely to see it in the sports pages of your local paper paper. It’s Roller Derby for women. However if you’ve seen the Drew Barrymore film Whip It, which gave the sport the full Hollywood treatment, (in Drews oh so Indie way), your probably already familiar with it. The sport has its roots in America in the middle of the last century and has seen a revival in the last few years. However now think, women in roller skates, some with tattoos, make-up and glitter with a really burlesque feel– all of them ready to roll. Popular during the 70s in the US, in the last five years it’s made a major comeback and has now arrived in here in Europe. The High-Energy sport is simple. Two teams consisting of five members one Jammer and four Blockers, skate around a track trying to score points by lapping opposing team members, whilst stopping the other team doing the same by blocking them. Men are strictly not allowed to play but they can referee and join the team’s skating practice.
By now, most you Carnavaliers, (as I now like to call you) are probably already familiar with 2D codes, because you are such up to date hip people. For those not in the known, (Judging Look!) They’re the square boxes that are showing up on ads, posters and billboards that connect people to mobile sites for more product information. But if that’s the only thing 2D codes can do, then what’s the point? Businesses that don’t understand how to use 2D codes think that they’re just a way to drive people through to a mobile landing page. But businesses that get it are using them in a variety of new and innovative ways — all of which lead to increased customer loyalty and greater revenue per customer. Here’s a primer and some key examples of how top companies are using 2D codes to improve business, but in theory they can now be used to promote virtually anything and it does not have to be for profit. How to Use 2D Codes for Business: The term “2D code” is used to describe the category in general, not any specific type of code. Some of the most common types of 2D codes [...]

Recently, I was almost convinced that we were seeing a Nokia turn-around… the Ovi store is looking better and sales are picking up, there’s been bold moves like free Ovi Maps and there’s some impressively priced new handsets coming. However preliminary feedback on their flagship N8 Smartphone suggests that this brief spell of good news is over nearly as quickly as it started. What Nokia now needs to do, is completely reinvent itself with a completely new OS with some great new hardware wrapped around it. Symbian, for all its previous technical excellence and maturity, is badly let down by its now slow and far to bulky programming and of course the current offerings of the completely non-logical S60 user-interfaces. The much-leaked N8 was the handset to fix Nokia’s current problems – a flagship device sporting the new Symbian^3 OS to match the excellent hardware with the UI it deserved. Sadly, the first feedback from Eldar at Mobile Review (article in Russian, but with plenty of extra pictures) is being reported as overwhelmingly negative… ” …they’ve made cosmetic improvements, that users should like. And users do not like them. I get a feeling that Nokia is living in some wonderland, where people are buying it’s products in droves.
